Learning Objectives
- Explain how government influenced the development of industry during the 1870s and 1880s. Describe how monetary policy affected the economy and explain how corporations emerged. Describe the methods by which the government attempted to both promote and regulate these enterprises.
- Describe the methods used by the heads of industry to expand local businesses into national corporations. Also, explain how the nation’s economic system was growing increasingly interconnected during this period, as evidenced by the Panic of 1873.
- Explain the vision of those who sought to create a “New South” and the challenges they faced. Describe the ways that the New South reflected the ideas and challenges of Reconstruction, as well as new challenges related to modernity and the growth of industry.
