Course Description: Students will demonstrate knowledge of functions in general, and polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions in particular. Students may also demonstrate knowledge of linear systems or sequences and series. Emphasis is placed on algebraic problem solving skills. A graphing calculator or software will be used as a tool to further algebraic knowledge. (Credits: 5)
Prerequisites: Successful completion of MTH 095 or equivalent as determined by the Mathematics Department.
Required Materials:
- Stitz, Carl, Jeff Zeager, 2013, College Algebra, stitz-zeager.com. In Print or Online
- Graphing Utility, Graph Paper, Ruler
- MyOpenMath.com access
Student Outcomes: After completion of this course the student will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
⇒ Introduction to Functions - Ch. 1
⇒ Linear & Quadratic Functions - Ch. 2;
⇒ Polynomial Functions - Ch. 3;
⇒ Rational Functions - Ch. 4;
⇒ Further topics in Functions - Ch. 5.
⇒ Exponential & Logarithmic Functions - Ch. 6.
⇒ Draw and analyze pretty pictures - All chapters
⇒ Other topics such as matrices, conics, sequences, or series as time allows
Method of Instruction: This is primarily a lecture course, though there will be group and project work on a daily basis. Attendance is expected, along with your commitment to do math everyday. A graphing utility is required, as well as graphing paper, and a ruler.
Expectations:
- Your attendance is expected along with your most sincere effort. You are paying to be here; you ought to show up for class, ON TIME. You can show up late once, quietly.
- Don’t cheat or you’ll be sorry. Although the instructor assumes that no cheating will take place, any evidence of cheating will be reported to the VP of Instruction, pursued thoroughly and dealt with strictly. A negative grade will be assigned on the first instance of cheating; An F in the course will be assigned on the second.
- Each section covered should be read before the scheduled lecture and worked through immediately after the lecture.
- You are also expected to be considerate in class, upholding the utmost respect for the educational environment. If you are inconsiderate, then you will be asked to leave.
Homework: Homework is required and should be worked on daily. There
are online exercises available though XYZtextbooks.com and a list of book exercises. Online home-
work is worth 10 points for each section and is due before the chapter test date.
Keep your homework in a loose-leaf notebook for easy reference when you have questions and in
preparing for tests. Make sure that you show all of your work. Communicating a process is as
valuable as showing an answer, especially when you are looking back at it later. When you are done
with college nobody will care whether you can find an oblique asymptote of an improper rational
function, but you will be expected to clearly communicate complex ideas.
It is strongly recommended that you do all relevant exercises in the review problem set at the end
of each chapter before an exam.
It is required that you take a practice chapter test, 20 points for each chapter covered. These
practice tests are extremely important to your success.
It is also required that you submit corrections to any exam questions that you get wrong, 20 points
for each test.
You may be given other assignments throughout the quarter.
Testing Procedures: There will be three mid-term exams (100 points each), plus a comprehensive final exam (150 points).
Quizzes will be distributed throughout the quarter (5-20 points each).
No make-up exams or quizzes will be given. However, if you do miss one exam you may substitute
your final exam percentage for that exam, or your lowest exam grade if you missed none.
The final exam must be taken during finals week.
Method of Evaluation:
Your final grade will be a weighted average of all of your homework, quiz and exam grades.
Homework | 25% | A is ≥ 90% | |
Quizzes & Tests | 50% | B is ≥ 80% | |
Final Exam | 25% | C is ≥ 70% | |
D is ≥ 60% | |||
F is < 60% |
